When does Tabletalk and Meta-Gaming become part of the game?
A few days ago a user posted a story about how his family were egregiously bending the rules, and even willfully misinterpreting them: https://www.reddit.com/boardgames/comments/lapuf1/i_am_never_playing_another_board_game_with_my_sos/ The overwhelming consensus of users could be summarized as "If it's not in the rulebook, you can't do it." Rulebooks are set of prescriptive guidelines that limit player behavior to outlined mechanics, no more, no less. I agree with this sentiment, in fact our hobby would likely not function if not for this simple social construct... but is that actually true? You see, there's a very murky aspect of our hobby, particularly when playing games outside the Euro-sphere, but not exclusively; That issue is the fact that you are playing with PEOPLE. Tabletalk and Meta-gaming behaviors of some form are an inevitable part of any group, in my opinion, and for some games they wouldn't function without it. Obviously, some trading and negotiation games build it into their systems, while others simply allude to it being a possibility. Sidereal Confluence is by definition, driven by player negotiation. Scythe has a single line in the rulebook that says you can exchange coins if you like but I've never seen anyone actually do it... Then there's games like Inis, which I have seen described MANY times as a game of "negotiation and shifting alliances"... yet not ONCE in the rulebook are either of those things mentioned. The only time discussion is remotely alluded to in the rules is for the resolution of clashes, but that could have easily been rephrased to be a bluffing mechanic where the clash ends when both players "pass" rather than "agree to end." It isn't a negotiation game in the rules, but it is in practice for many game groups, and more power to them for making it work in a way they find engaging, thematic, and experiential (I don't get it, but good for them). I've heard many reviewers and fans praise all sorts of other games for being great, but only if you add in negotiation, Tabletalk, houserules, creative storytelling, or other metagame behaviors that enhance the game for their group, despite those not being expressly in the rules as intended. This leads me to my question for all you boardgamers, when is Tabletalk or other Metagaming behaviors acceptable to you or your group? ---------------------------- Here are some scenarios for you to ponder. Would you allow negotiation, or other metagaming behaviors... -Only when expressly allowed? (Twilight Imperium 4, Rising Sun, Sidereal, Chinatown, Bohnanza, Sheriff of Nottingham, Cheating Bee...etc) -So long as it stays in game? (would you king-make in GoT2e for preferable treatment in the next game or a foot rub later?) -When thematically appropriate? (Inis is ok but you wouldn't coordinate in Azul) -Always; Everything is negotiable so long as it's not forbidden? (Would you offer to discard a specific tree from your hand in Arboretum or play with your hand face-up to for mutually beneficial treatment) -Even if it's clearly against the games intent, but technically isn't illegal? (Think Hanabi superfans with their hidden communication language) -In zero sum games where it's strategically advantageous to cut a player off? (Evolution or Risk could see players banding together to take down the leader who would otherwise be unstoppable) -Even if it obfuscates information meant to be public, because it could be human nature or honest mistakes? (Stacking resource cubes or coins to make it harder to see, or keeping cards facedown in a pile so others don't know how many are left, or picking up components to read or rearrange so that no one ever can get a complete understanding of what's in the active play area?) -Even if it reveals potentially game-changing information not expressly said to be hidden? (counting the remaining number of cards in a deck that serves as a game-end timer) -In high conflict games, but not low-interaction or low-complexity ones? (let players negotiate spots in Glen More or bird cards in Wingspan) -If it makes it more fun and doesn't change or even enhances the core decision process? (My group is very particular about how to place chips and cards in Splendor so they are easy to read) -Including the sharing of hidden information voluntarily? (Secret objectives in games like Argent, or Archipelago) -To "bash-the-leader" where you point out someone's successes or vulnerabilities and encourage others to take advantage? (Root basically.) -When there are shared resources or pools, but it's not in the rules? (Brass with its market mechanics, or Takenoko where every player controlling the same pandas and Gardners) -For the sake of an inside joke? (Think word or party games where certain categories are really iffy) -So long as it doesn't needlessly prolong the game? (I once lost a 7-hour game of Risk in college despite holding Australia and Asia... I didn't even take second! I'm still mad, over a decade later) -So long as you don't gain an unfair advantage? (could you take notes to track what cards have been played in The King is Dead?) -So long as you don't leverage the behaviors of other players? (Let's say I have a perfect memory of every card played in a game and know what the last few cards in the deck must be... is it ok for me to tell the current player so that he makes a different choice more to my advantage? What if I don't tell them? How about if you think a player is needlessly restricting themselves, everything is legal, but they have misinterpreted a rule or situation to their own disadvantage?)
I hope Biden wins (but not for the reasons you'd expect. trust me)
I made a bet with my dad that if Biden wins I get a gaming laptop but if Trump wins I have to wash his car with a sponge UPDATE: Like two days ago my dad backed out cause it was obvious Biden was gonna win... One of the basic pieces of furniture, a chair is a type of seat. Its primary features are two pieces of a durable material, attached as back and seat to one another at a 90° or slightly greater angle, with usually the four corners of the horizontal seat attached in turn to four legs—or other parts of the seat's underside attached to three legs or to a shaft about which a four-arm turnstile on rollers can turn—strong enough to support the weight of a person who sits on the seat (usually wide and broad enough to hold the lower body from the buttocks almost to the knees) and leans against the vertical back (usually high and wide enough to support the back to the shoulder blades). The legs are typically high enough for the seated person's thighs and knees to form a 90° or lesser angle.[1][2] Used in a number of rooms in homes (e.g. in living rooms, dining rooms, and dens), in schools and offices (with desks), and in various other workplaces, chairs may be made of wood, metal, or synthetic materials, and either the seat alone or the entire chair may be padded or upholstered in various colors and fabrics. Chairs vary in design. An armchair has armrests fixed to the seat;[3] a recliner is upholstered and under its seat is a mechanism that allows one to lower the chair's back and raise into place a fold-out footrest;[4] a rocking chair has legs fixed to two long curved slats; a wheelchair has wheels fixed to an axis under the seat.[5] Etymology Chair comes from the early 13th-century English word chaere, from Old French chaiere ("chair, seat, throne"), from Latin cathedra ("seat").[6] History Main article: History of the chair Five three-legged chairs around a low-legged table from Sliven 19th Century Lifestyle Museum Early 20th-century armchair made in eastern Australia, with strong heraldic embellishment The chair has been used since antiquity, although for many centuries it was a symbolic article of state and dignity rather than an article for ordinary use. "The chair" is still used as the emblem of authority in the House of Commons in the United Kingdom[7] and Canada,[8] and in many other settings. In keeping with this historical connotation of the "chair" as the symbol of authority, committees, boards of directors, and academic departments all have a 'chairman' or 'chair'.[9] Endowed professorships are referred to as chairs.[10] It was not until the 16th century that chairs became common.[11] Until then, people sat on chests, benches, and stools, which were the ordinary seats of everyday life. The number of chairs which have survived from an earlier date is exceedingly limited; most examples are of ecclesiastical, seigneurial or feudal origin.[citation needed] Chairs were in existence since at least the Early Dynastic Period of Egypt (c. 3100 BC). They were covered with cloth or leather, were made of carved wood, and were much lower than today's chairs – chair seats were sometimes only 10 inches (25 cm) high.[12] In ancient Egypt chairs appear to have been of great richness and splendor. Fashioned of ebony and ivory, or of carved and gilded wood, they were covered with costly materials, magnificent patterns and supported upon representations of the legs of beasts or the figures of captives. Generally speaking, the higher ranked an individual was, the taller and more sumptuous was the chair he sat on and the greater the honor. On state occasions the pharaoh sat on a throne, often with a little footstool in front of it.[13] The average Egyptian family seldom had chairs, and if they did, it was usually only the master of the household who sat on a chair. Among the better off, the chairs might be painted to look like the ornate inlaid and carved chairs of the rich, but the craftsmanship was usually poor.[12]
21[M4F] Anywhere - I've got loads of hobbies I'd like to share with you!
About Me I'm a 21 year old guy born in Malaysia but I've been living in Dubai for the last 15 years. I'm in university doing my Bachelors in Aerospace Tech. I'll be graduating this year, literally just a few weeks left from this semester. I honestly have no idea what to do after graduation but I'm leaning towards doing my Masters somewhere new. Maybe Australia, Canada, or Ireland. I have basically no experience in dating but I feel like I would be good at it. I like to listen to what people have got going on in their lives and just learning about someone in general and I'd like to think of myself as a thoughtful and kind person. That does mean I usually listen a lot more than I talk, but I'd say I can hold my own in a conversation. Hobbies I've got a lot of hobbies...
Binge Watching TV Shows: Does this count as a hobby? Probably not. Does it make my productivity drop to 0? Yes. Will I stop? No. As usual, tons of Michael Schur stuff, The Office, Parks and Rec, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place, also Psych and Community.
Board Games: I've been playing Magic: the Gathering for a bit and really enjoy it but I've been branching out to modern board games like Secret Hitler and Splendor. I've also been making and painting a 3D printed version of Catan that's been progressing a bit slower than I'd like :(
Gaming: Of course, an obvious one most people do. I really enjoy spending time with my friends who I can't see in person anymore. I've been playing and enjoying a lot of Final Fantasy XIV lately.
Go-karting: Karting, and motorsports in general, are my main hobbies. I really enjoy competitive racing and was really excited that the team I manage got through to the world finals this year but sadly that got cancelled for obvious reasons. I also got into sim racing through karting.
Making stuff: I don't really know what else to call this, so I guess making stuff is adequate. I really like making things. I have a 3D printer and find it really satisfying to design stuff on a computer and see it in my hands a few hours later. Also some woodworking stuff. I got into pyrography and found it really calming and enjoyable, plus if I run out of nice gift idea, I just make something. This is probably my most satisfying hobby.
Music: Not just listening, but playing too. I mostly play guitar but I'm looking to learn to play piano and play a little bit of bass, ukulele, and drums. I mostly listen to rock and indie, stuff like The Strokes, Peach Pit, Foo Fighters, but also a huge variety of other stuff, Black Sabbath, Post Malone, Childish Gambino, The Macarons Project.
Motorbikes: I've been wanting to get into it for a while but only recently actually been into it seriously and am looking to buy when I settle somewhere.
Photography: Only recently got into it and haven't really had much time to really get into it. I will say, it's really made me look at things a little differently. I like shooting portraits and street photography, maybe one day we'll meet up and do a photo shoot?
Travelling: Yeah, really basic of me. I like travelling though and really want to do more of it. I went to Japan last year and have been yearning to go back for a month long stay or more.
Oof That's a long list. Fun Facts
My maximum typing speed is ~78WPM.
My arms got sliced up by a drone a few months and now I've got some wicked scars (Arms are pretty much healed, just need to build up the muscle that was cut).
My favourite ice cream flavour is cookie dough so far. I'll say so far because I haven't tried all the flavours in the world yet, so until then... 'so far'.
I have a cat. Her name's Scratchy and she had a brother named Itchy.
I think I can cook really well. My favourite thing I've cooked is probably country fried steak topped with southern white gravy. Best thing I ever ate was probably takoyaki in Osaka.
I grew up speaking English. I know basic Malay, enough to get me around and a bit of Arabic. I've been trying to learn Japanese.
I upvote [M4-] posts if I see they've been downvoted for no reason.
Anyway... My fingers hurt from the typing and re-typing I've had to do so I'm gonna finish this off. I'm looking for someone around my age, anywhere around the world. It'd be great if you like to talk, 'cause I think I've said quite a lot in this and would like to learn more about you. Feel free to message me and ask me about other stuff I do. I'm open to chatting on here or on Insta, Snap, or Discord. I'm also open to sending a picture if you're willing too.
Hi Guys I am really excited to be making a board game called Patriot, due to drop in the next few months. I would love if you could check out my progress so far on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or even my website. It's been a bit of hard work getting word out there that I'm doing this, but I believe our community will love the game once they know it exists. This is one of the ways that I'm trying to get the word out there, so I hope you click along and also help out. Why am I giving away splendor? I want to give away Splendor as it's one of my favourite casual games, and in my opinion a 'must-have' for any collector. What are the conditions? I will buy the game and ship it to your address. Shipping must cost less than half of cost of the game. If for whatever reason we work out that it doesn't - I will either donate the game value to a charity of your choice, or we can redraw (up to you). How do I participate? Choose a number between 1 and 1,000 and post a comment. The draw will take place in about 12hrs from the time I post this since I live in Australia and it's already night time here :P How do I win? I will use Random.org to generate a random number. If there are multiples of the same value, I will choose the first number posted. Best of luck! Mods, please let me know if I am breaking any rules here (if I am I will edit my post). EDIT: I am going to bed so will stop responding for a bit - when I wake up I will draw the winner! Good luck to you all, and don't forget to follow on some sort of social media! EDIT 2: Are you ready? Winner is being drawn in 15 minutes, or so. EDIT 3: Out of 1,144 comments, EvoMaster is the winner with number 719. Congratulations! Seeing how successful this was, I will likely do it again some time down the track. Please don't forget to follow on social media or sign up to the KS drop notification via the website - it's people like you guys that I want to keep in the loop! Thank you again, all, and have a great day.

Got into it about a year ago. I did play a lot of board games a few years ago when I was living in my home country (Australia), but moved to California in 2014 and couldn't really get back into it until recently, once I've settled down. I'm up to 25 games now, mostly play with the girlfriend. Our favorites right now are Jaipur, Dominion and Carcassone. Here's the imgur album. Here's the list of what's in the photo: Pandemic, Concept, Splendor, Splendor Play Mat, King of Tokyo, Telestrations, Dominion, Catan, Summoner Wars, Machi Koro, Carcassonne, Forbidden Island, Jaipur, Exploding Kittens, Sushi Go, Hanabi, 7 Wonders: Duel, Lost Cities, Qwirkle, Guillotine, Codenames, Zombie Dice, Playing Cards, Uno, Monopoly, Pixel Tactics, Love Letter.

[WSIG] Competitive game for 2+ players with limited or no 'destructive' competition.
My wife and I do a lot of 2 player gaming in the evenings and recently she bought Tash Kalar having asked the store assistant for a 'competitive game good for 2 players'. I love the game and it was a good suggestion based on that request, but I think it really hasn't clicked for my wife because she dislikes it when her pieces get wiped off the board. What we like: Our most played game by far is Race for the Galaxy, we also enjoy Castles of Burgundy 2 player. We own Takenoko and 7 Wonders but don't play them much two player, and have Small World but don't really like it. General requirements: Number of players: 2 players must be good. We do have other gaming friends so playing more is a bonus. Game Length: Up to 90 minutes, under 60 minutes is a bonus - we often don't have more than an hour of solid "thinking" time after work and putting our child to bed. Complexity of Game: At least as heavy/interesting as Race for the Galaxy, otherwise my wife will probably just ask to play that instead! I've avoided games like Splendor and Jaipur for this reason. Theme of Game: Theme can be just about anything, though we don't particularly like sexist or racist tropes in our games - my wife had a bit of an issue with the Sylvan deck's art in Tash Kalar, for instance. Competitive/Co-operative: It needs to be competitive and preferably feel like there's decent room for improvement at the game. My wife is clearly more comfortable with euro-style competition based on victory points, but I would also be very interested in other options for easing her in to more destructive/wargame style competition. Budget: I live in Australia, everything's expensive so I won't set a hard limit. Any suggestions? Any other information I could provide that would help?
Hello /boardgames I've been a long time lurker and while I am procrastinating for exams I've decided to post my collection. I am a university student in Australia and I have been collecting for around 2 years. The hobby started 2 years ago when I started watching wil Wheaton's Tabletop and I bought myself King of Toyko, Munchkin Deluxe and Ticket to Ride from Amazon (exchange rate was horrible). I've been hooked ever since. http://imgur.com/a/bAKKo As you can see, the king right now is Codenames which rightfully belongs at the top! Most played games right now are: Codenames Most Recently played games: Witness, ONUW, Splendor, Codenames, Avalon, Tiny Epic Galaxies Never played AGAIN: Munchkin I want to also use this opportunity to ask a question. Next year I will be volunteering in Cambodia, building a kindergarten school for ~50 kids aged 5-6. I was wondering if there is a board game which I could introduce to these kids? I've been thinking of getting Skull as it can potentially eliminate the language barrier and should be simple enough to teach to 5-6 year olds. Any suggestions?
